Display Optical Bonding
G-BOND Optical Bonding
Understanding and controlling reflected light will dramatically improve the performance of a display in any ambient lighting condition.
Sunlight viewability of a display depends on the differences between "lumination" and "illumination" of the display. The lumination of the display is its brightness. A display's brightness, typically referred to as a Nit (Candela per meter/2) is the amount of light energy coming out of the display. Illumination is the amount of ambient light shining onto a display. The readability of a display is dependant on the amount of light that is being reflected off of the display.
Light travels through a variety of transparent materials; such as air, glass, plastic, and even water. These material's ability to transmit light is measured by their "indices of refraction". As light transfers from one material to another, such as air to glass, the differences the index of refraction will cause reflection. In the case of an air-to-glass interface, the reflection will be slightly less than 5% of the ambient light. All surfaces that have an index mismatch will reflect and the reflection is cumulative. In the case of a standard glass or plastic window, there are three surfaces with an index mismatch which will create a total reflection of nearly 15% of the ambient light. If the total reflection (in nits) is close to the displays brightness, the contrast of the display will be reduced to the point where the display's readability is reduced to unacceptable levels.
G-BOND from GDS CLEARVIEW is a solid, transparent bond which optically couples the front cover glass or touch screen directly to the face of the display. This internal bond eliminates reflection from the two internal layers. The outer surface of the window is treated with anti-reflecting coatings which matches the front surface of the glass with the index of refraction of air. This combination reduces the total reflection of the display and front cover glass to less than 2% of the ambient light. A reduction of reflection of this level, all but eliminates reflective loss in most ambient lighting conditions. With reductions of this level, displays with 300-500 nits of brightness will be viewable in daylight or indirect lighting conditions. At 500-800 nits brightness, most displays will be completely sunlight viewable.
Aside from the optical quality, G-BOND eliminates the air-gap which prevents heat build-up from the "greenhouse" effect and prevents fogging from moisture or contamination from dirt or particles. It also offers shock protection and other damage to the LCD itself.

LCD HISTORY
LCDs are everywhere in our lives today, but they did not come about overnight. It took a long time to get from the discovery of liquid crystals to the multitude of LCD applications we now enjoy. Liquid crystals were first discovered in 1888, by Austrian botanist Friedrich Reinitzer. Reinitzer observed that when he melted a curious cholesterol-like substance (cholesteryl benzoate), it first became a cloudy liquid and then cleared up as its temperature rose. Upon cooling, the liquid turned blue before finally crystallizing. Eighty years passed before RCA made the first experimental LCD in 1968. Since then, LCD manufacturers have steadily developed ingenious variations and improvements on the technology, taking the LCD to amazing levels of technical complexity. And there is every indication that we will continue to enjoy new LCD developments in the future!
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY
LCDs work from the ability of liquid crystals (LC) to rotate polarized light relative to a pair of crossed polarizers laminated to the outside of the display. There are two main types of LCD displays used for calculators today: Twisted nematic (TN) and supertwisted nematic (STN). TN displays twist polarized light to 90 degrees and have a limited viewing angle. STN displays were developed to twist polarized light between 180 to 260 degrees resulting in better contrast and a wider viewing angle.
A LCD consists of two plates of glass, sealed around the perimeter, with a layer of liquid crystal fluid between them. Transparent, conductive electrodes are deposited on the inner surfaces of the glass plates. The electrodes define the segments, pixels, or special symbols of the display. Next a thin polymer layer is applied on top of the electrodes. The polymer is etched with channels in order to align the twist orientation of the LC's helix shaped molecules. Finally, polarizing films are laminated to the outer surfaces of the glass plates at 90 degree angles. Normally, two polarizing films at 90 degrees should be dark, preventing any transmission of light but due to the ability of LC to rotate polarized light the display appears clear. When AC voltage is passed through the LC, the crystals within this field align so that the polarized light is not twisted. This allows the light to be blocked by the crossed polarizers thus making the activated segment or symbol to appear dark.
COLOR
An LCD that can show colors must have three subpixels with red, green and blue color filters to create each color pixel. Through the careful control and variation of the voltage applied, the intensity of each subpixel can range over 256 shades. Combining the subpixels produces a possible palette of 16.8 million colors (256 shades of red x 256 shades of green x 256 shades of blue), as shown below. These color displays take an enormous number of transistors. For example, a typical laptop computer supports resolutions up to 1,024x768. If we multiply 1,024 columns by 768 rows by 3 subpixels, we get 2,359,296 transistors etched onto the glass! If there is a problem with any of these transistors, it creates a "bad pixel" on the display. Most active matrix displays have a few bad pixels scattered across the screen.
BACKLIGHT
Most computer Liquid Crystal Display panels are built with fluorescent tubes above, beside and sometimes behind the LCD. A white diffusion panel behind the LCD redirects and scatters the light evenly to ensure a uniform display. This is known as a backlight. A fluorescent light is most often a long straight glass tube that produces white light. Inside the glass tube there is a low-pressure mercury vapor. When ionized, mercury vapor emits ultraviolet light. Human eyes are not sensitive to ultraviolet light. The inside of a fluorescent light is coated with phosphor. Phosphor is a substance that can accept energy in one form and emit the energy in the form of visible light. For example, energy from a high-speed electron in a TV tube is absorbed by the phosphors that make up the pixels. The light we see from a fluorescent tube is the light given off by the phosphor coating the inside of the tube. The phosphor fluoresces when energized, hence the name. A typical laptop display uses a tiny Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) for the backlight. One of these small tubes is able to provide a bright white light source that can be diffused by the panel behind the LCD. Next generation of Backlight utilize much improved LEDs that provide more efficient light source. In building efficient Highbright LCD Backlight, it is imperative to be able to manage the heat dissipation in addition to providing ample light.
TRANSFLECTIVE
Transmissive type TFT LCD contains a backlight where light travels from the backlight through color filter and then appears on the panel. The main advantage for this type of display is it's high brightness. However, the brighter the light the higher the electric load consumed. Reflective type TFT LCD contains a reflective mirror, utilizing the external light for image display. The main advantage of this type of display includes it's power saving, and light-weight (without backlight) characteristics. However this type of display is more ideal for viewing with external light sources.
Transflective type TFT LCD is a promising displaying device for both outdoor and indoor applications. Benefits of adopting Transflective technology include:
- Power saving
- Sun light readability
- Indoor readability
- Light-weight
LCD LIGHTING THEORY
Liquid crystal, lying between TFT substrates and CF substrates, will rotate into different angles according to the charges applied to each pixel. When millions of pixels are charged differently, we could obtain millions of LC angles within the area. The reason why we need to control the LC's standing angle lying within millions of pixels is that we need to use LC's optic rotation nature to control the amount of light passing through the LCD panel. As shown at the following diagram, light from the back light module travels from the TFT panel through ITO electrode, turned by Liquid Crystal and reaches the LCD panel on the top. LC angles control the amount of light being rotated. From the above example: the bigger the standing angle the less the light passes through the top substrate. Light not rotated by LC will be absorbed by the top polarizer. In the Natural world, light travels in random directions; the function of polarizer is to filter most of them and allows only certain light with desired direction to pass through.
LTPS
Polysilicon is a Silicon-based material, which contains numerous Si grains with sizes ranging from 0.1 to several um. In semiconductor manufacturing, polysilicon is usually prepared by LPCVD (Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition) and then annealed above 900°C, i.e. so called SPC (Solid Phase Crystallization) method. Obviously, the same way could not be applied to FPD industry since the strain temperature of glass is only about 650°C. Therefore, Low Temperature Polysilicon (LTPS) technology is the novel technology specific for FPD application.
Currently there are several approaches in the preparation of LTPS film on glass or plastic substrate:
① Metal Induced Crystallization (MIC): It is a kind of SPC method but, compared to conventional SPC, it can achieve polysilicon under lower temperature (about 500°C - 600°C). This is because a thin metal layer is coated before crystallization anneal. The metal element is the key in lowering the activation energy of crystallization.
② Cat-CVD: This method directly deposits poly-film without further thermal anneal. The deposition temperature has reportedly gone as low as 300°C. The growth mechanism involves the catalytic cracking reaction of SiH4-H2 mixture.
③ Laser anneal: This is the most popular method used currently. Excimer laser is used as an energy source to heat and melt a-Si with low Hydrogen content. It is later recrystallized as poly-film.
MVA (MULTI-DOMAIN VERTICAL ALIGNMENT)
The special LC alignment method for MVA technology allows a much better viewing angle and avoids grayscale inversion.
Benefits of adopting MVA technology include:
- High contrast ratio
- Wide view angle
- No gray scale inversion
- High resolution
- Fast response time
